October 2003 Shaker Heights Council Unanimously Adopts Green Building LegislationThe City of Shaker Heights Council has adopted “a Green Building measure that would support use of sustainable building and design practices in all new public and private construction.” When cities in our bioregion begin to adopt such measures and back them up with actions that help their citizenry understand and benefit from such efforts, it is the first step toward institutionalizing green building work and marks a significant step forward in helping protect our bioregion. We look forward to the day when we can tout the actual measurable impact such efforts can have on the betterment of our environment. On the residential front, Shaker will soon be building several “green” in-fill homes. An RFP for builders based on green standards was published and Rysar Builders was selected to build these homes. We will be sharing in-depth information about this work in the near future on this website under “new house recipes”. In addition, Shaker will soon launch a “Go Green” Rebate Program, a home improvement program designed to help homeowners make their homes healthier and more energy efficient. We will be sharing in-depth information about this work in the near future on this website under “rehab recipes”. Download information about Shaker’s
green plans.
